New volunteer opportunities at the Nature Discovery Centre

Our Engaging with Nature project, based in Thatcham, is looking for volunteers. Project officer, Carrie Starbuck explains more about the role and how to get involved.

Research shows how nature has incredible benefits for both our physical and mental health, but it was during the pandemic when people turned towards their local green spaces for sanctuary, often for the first time, that really drove this truth home.

Our Engaging with Nature project, based at the Nature Discovery Centre in Thatcham, harnesses the healing power of nature to improve mental health and wellbeing. We now have an exciting opportunity for volunteers to support the Wildlife Trust’s unique Engaging with Nature project.

Over 10 weeks we work with a small group to learn, grow and connect. Using the principles of nature connection these outdoor sessions will build confidence, self-esteem and improve wellbeing for participants and volunteers alike.

As a volunteer you will be integral to inspiring and supporting the group in nature connection activities such as, mindfulness, eco-art and wildlife conservation.

There will be a range of fun activities to be involved with such as:

  • Leading and supporting in creative eco-therapy activities (full training will be provided)
  • Proactively participating in ‘talking circles’ to encourage a safe sharing space
  • Assisting with the set up for sessions, for example, preparing food and drinks or putting up rain shelters.
  • Assisting with the post-session wrap up such as taking down shelters and tidying the area.
  • Supporting Carrie, the project officer, wherever possible.

We are also keen to use your own skills and interests so we can all collectively support the group and enhance the programme.

Sessions are every Thursday and we're looking for volunteers to start with us from the end of August.
