About the event
We are looking for a cohort of volunteer hairstreak surveyors who can carry out surveys for us this spring and summer as part of the Reconnecting Bernwood, Otmoor and the Ray (RBOR) project. We will be teaching you how to survey with UV, as well as how to carry out daytime surveys.
By becoming a volunteer hairstreak surveyor, you will directly contribute to nature’s recovery, as the data you collect will help us to monitor hairstreak distribution across the BOR area and inform our conservation efforts.
This course will include a blended approach of classroom and practical outdoor sessions, giving you the skills to confidently carry out hairstreak surveys.
Course breakdown:
· Welcome and Introductions
· Classroom session:
o Introduction to Hairstreaks
o Common Threats
o Species identification and Phenology
o Overview of habitat management principles
o Day time survey techniques and where to look.
o Introduction to UV survey techniques
o How to record your findings & assigning you to a farm to survey
· Break
· Travel to Bernwood Meadows Nature reserve
· Nighttime UV session
Following the course, participants will be expected to undertake in targeted surveys on farms in the BOR area, using the methods learned throughout the day to record Hairstreak butterflies and report back to project staff via iRecord. Access to a car is required to reach survey sites.
All necessary equipment will be provided. Bring waterproof clothing in case of rain, and wear suitable footwear (e.g., walking boots or wellies) for the outdoor session,
as the terrain may be wet and uneven. Wear old clothing that can get muddy. Parking is available at the site. Tea/coffee and biscuits will be provided.
