Family activity: how to make a nature art frame

Family activity: how to make a nature art frame

Create your own nature-inspired pictures with this fun and simple activity

Make your own nature art frame, then get exploring outdoors and create lots of nature-inspired pictures. Who knows, it might make you see the world differently!

This activity can be done on a walk, in your garden or even out your window, and is suitable for all ages.

Nature art frame you will need

You will need:

  • Recycled cardboard e.g. cereal box (or plain/coloured card or paper)
  • Pencils/crayons/pens
  • Scissors
  • Camera or mobile phone with camera
Nature frame step 1

Step 1: draw a simple shape like a circle, square or heart on to your cardboard.

Younger children may find it easier to draw around a template shape or create shape using pre-drawn dot to dots. Older children may like to draw a picture or more complex shape like a butterfly or dinosaur.

Cut out the shape

Step 2: cut the shape out to make your frame to look through. Get an adult to help you with the scissors!

Step 3: head outside (if possible) with an adult and use your art frame to explore, looking at all the wonderful nature around you! Trees, flowers, creatures and clouds in the sky are just a few examples of things you might spot.

You can do this in a garden, on a walk, or even just on your doorstep by holding your frame up to the sky.

Take a photo

Step 4: take a photo through your art frame as you hold it in front of the nature you have spotted. We don’t have lots of arms like an octopus so ask someone with you to help take the photo. You now have a record of what you found on your adventure!

Identify what you found

Step 5 (optional extra): you may like to put your photos in a scrap book or to try and identify some of the plants and animals you have seen. See the spotter sheets below to get you started.

Don’t forget you can use your nature art frame throughout the year and see how the colours change in your pictures from spring to summer, through autumn to winter!

We'd love to see your nature art frame photos so please share them with us!
