An opportunity too good to miss
The chance to safeguard valuable ancient woodland and the rare species that live in it doesn’t come along very often. Please help BBOWT to protect this very special site and the plants and wildlife that depend on it, for years to come.
We’ve been given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to buy this woodland, and there’s no guarantee that other owners would have the expertise or incentive to provide the same care. Please can you donate to help us care for Hamgreen Wood and protect some of the region’s rarest wildlife for generations to come?Estelle Bailey MBEChief Executive of BBOWT

Black hairstreak butterfly by Colin Williams
An ancient green lane running down one side of the wood, Oxford Lane, is a hotspot for black hairstreak butterflies. The colony here is nationally important and the site is often described as the ‘best’ for black hairstreak in the country.

Bechstein's bat by Zdenek Macat
One of our rarest bat species, Bechstein’s bat, is a woodland specialist - using them for roosting and feeding. With Hamgreen Wood in our suite of reserves, two of the three woodlands the bats use for breeding in our area will be under BBOWT protection.

What your donation can help to protect
Hamgreen Wood contains one of the largest remaining examples of ancient woodland in the area and includes mature oaks, hazel coppice, field maple, bluebells and early purple orchids. Two-thirds of the woodland is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The big picture - more nature everywhere
Hamgreen Wood is at the heart of our Bernwood Forest and Ray Valley Living Landscape, close to our Upper Ray Meadows and Finemere and Rushbeds Woods reserves. Adding this site to our existing network of reserves will further strengthen and protect the value of the whole area for wildlife.

How much do you need to raise?
We are very grateful for some legacies and generous donations towards the asking price, but we still need to raise £300,000 to secure Hamgreen Wood into BBOWT’s ownership and help pay for the legal fees and resources required to support the transfer of this special site.
If we are so fortunate to raise any additional funds, these will be used to support both future land purchases and our core work, all as part of BBOWT’s Nature Recovery Fund.
Why is this appeal needed now?
Hamgreen Wood is a rare gem, hidden at the heart of a wider landscape that we have been working hard to restore for many years. Deep in the Upper Ray, quietly located by the bustling A41, these 100 acres of ancient woodland and grasslands are home to many rare species, such as the Bechstein’s bat and a large colony of black hairstreak butterflies. The woodland area is a designated SSSI (Site of Scientific Interest) and boasts such wonderful ancient indicator species as mature oaks, bluebells, dog’s mercury and early purple orchid. The grassland is certified as organic, and we are excited by the possibility of creating further uplift in its biodiversity.
In short, this site is a true rarity in a busy landscape…
Having carefully managed this special place for over 30 years, the owners now wish to sell this site and have privately approached BBOWT, keen that their legacy for this haven of wildlife lives on. Like them, we share the desire to keep Hamgreen Wood a protected and well-managed landscape, meaning we would like to buy it before it goes on the open market.
Our senior ecology and land management team have privately assessed the land, calling it ‘one of the most exciting opportunities to extend our portfolio in years.’ This appeal, coupled with the arrival of an incredible legacy, earmarked for such acquisitions, would considerably strengthen our ability to repair, protect and enhance the ancient landscape of the Upper Ray for generations to come.
