About the event

Join us for a mesmerising evening stargazing at College Lake with UK Astronomy. We’ll explore the skies and learn what you can discover on a winter’s evening. Perfect for beginners of any age to get to know our nights sky.

We’ll begin by setting the scene exploring our local solar system through a talk. Following this we’ll have a short break with the opportunity to grab a refreshment before we embark on our stargazing session. The UK Astronomy team will be setting up a range of telescopes and guiding us through the canopy of the night’s sky. Those who are confident are also welcome to bring their own binoculars and scopes to see if they can unlock some more of the nights sky for themselves.

Winter Weather can be unpredictable. If the weather is unsuitable for stargazing, we will delve into a session focusing on what you can see in the nights sky with just the naked eye. Please come dressed for both possibilities — layers, sturdy shoes, and clothing for all weathers.

The session is based in the barn which is a 5-10 minute walk from the car park. Trampers (mobility scooters) are available for hire to help visitors get from the car park to the barn. Please note that these are not suitable for the barn itself or in the area where our stargazing session is. Please contact collegelake@bbowt.org.uk to book these or if you have any questions.

Please read:

  • Depending on the weather the second half of the evening will either be spent outside stargazing or inside with a second talk. Please come dressed suitably for both activities -including clothing for all weathers.
  • Children (anyone under the age of 16) are more than welcome to the event but they must be accompanied by at least two adults who are able to supervise them. These adults will both need to be booked on to the event too.
  • If you own a torch we recommend bringing it - however this is non-essential
  • Our gates will open at 17:45 with the event beginning at 18:00.

Please be aware:

  • If you or a member of your household are feeling unwell on the day of the event, please do not attend.
  • Booking essential via Eventbrite.
  • Photography consent - BBOWT sometimes take photos/videos for marketing purposes used in the public domain. Please contact us if you do not consent.

Will you help answer nature's SOS call by adding a £5 gift to this booking? You'll help BBOWT bring nature back across our three counties. Please select a donation ticket option if you wish to donate. You can find out more about our Nature Recovery Fund.
