After years of persecution, people welcomed the return of the buzzard soaring across woods and fields. This conservation success story could have been seriously undermined by the Government’s recent proposals to weaken protection.
Thankfully, due to pressure from The Wildlife Trusts and other conservation organisations, the Government has backed down. We welcome Defra’s decision to halt its proposal to spend up to £375,000 researching ways to keep buzzards from targeting captive-reared pheasants.

The Government has proposed a new high speed rail line (HS2) from London to Birmingham, the route passes through Buckinghamshire and a small part of Oxfordshire. The route would affect more than 150 wildlife sites along the London to Birmingham route, including four Wildlife Trust reserves and many Sites of Special Scientific Interest.
We are very concerned about the Government’s proposed changes to the Habitats and Birds Directives, EU legislation that has helped to protect special areas such as the Thames Basin Heaths for wildlife.
