Speak up for nature’s recovery

Please help us to speak up for nature's recovery

Now is the time to use our voices to call for action to tackle climate change and nature’s decline, and to ensure Government’s long-term commitment to nature is enshrined in law. We need your help.

Join the virtual lobby

On Tuesday 30 June 2020, The Wildlife Trusts and many other NGOs are coming together for the very first virtual lobby of Parliament to give you the opportunity to ask your MP to act for a better future.

Please consider joining the mass lobby - you will find everything you need to help you with this in the link below. We've suggested some points to raise with your MP here.

How to join the virtual lobby

Email your MP

If you can’t join the virtual lobby, please send a personal email to your MP (you can find out who your MP is here).

A personal email is the most effective way to contact your MP but if you don’t have the time to do this, we have created a template letter for you to use.

What you should ask your MP (at the virtual lobby or by email):

  • Explain why nature is important to you and ask your MP to commit to champion a green and fair recovery from Covid-19.
  • Raise local issues with them that relate to a green and fair recovery.
  • Ask them to contact the Environment Minister, George Eustice, about the Environment Bill asking for it to be returned to Parliament as soon as possible and saying what we would like to see in it (see below).
  • Ask your MP to contact members of the Environment Bill Committee once the committee is resumed saying what we would like to see in the Bill (see below).

The Environment Bill should:

  • Put environmental ambition, principles and governance at the heart of government.
  • Include legally binding interim and long-term targets to ensure to ensure this work is kept on track.
  • Include a duty for ministers  to apply the environmental principles of integration, prevention, precaution, rectification and polluter pays.
  • Be amended to ensure the benefits of biodiversity offsets (new habitats created to offset harm done by developments) are protected for ever, not just or 30 years.
  • Include a requirement for local authorities to incorporate local nature recovery strategies and plans in their local plans.
  • Include a requirement for biodiversity ‘net gain’ in all future housing and infrastructure developments.

Become one of BBOWT's Wildlife Ambassadors

Did you know that some of our supporters are Wildlife Ambassadors, who help us speak up for nature by contacting their local councillors, MPs and joining our campaigns?

If you'd like to do more for local wildlife, you can sign up to become a Wildlife Ambassador too. We will contact you when there is an important environmental issue and provide you with plenty of information that you can use when contacting politicians.
