The Nature Discovery Centre

The Nature Discovery Centre is surrounded by a mosaic of different habitats with fantastic wildlife to see all year around.

Please note: There is currently a blue-green algal bloom in the lake at the Nature Discovery Centre. It is a natural process but it can be harmful to children and dogs. We therefore ask our visitors to please ensure you keep your dogs and children away from the lake. We are also not selling duck food at the moment to help promote the quality of the water. This is likely to last until the end of the summer. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause to your visit.

Please do not feed the birds on the lake. Nutrients from grain, bread and other bird food have a negative effect on water quality. The birds won’t be hungry if you don’t feed them, there’s plenty of other plant-based food for them in and around the lake.

Wander along the paths beside the lake, visit the internationally-important Thatcham Reedbeds nature reserve or explore some of the nearby woodland.

There is large network of footpaths, perfect for family days out or for the more adventurous. A bird hide provides stunning views over the reedbeds. You can collect a key for the bird hide from reception at the Nature Discovery Centre.

A variety of moths and butterflies can be seen, including garden tiger, butterbur, waved black, holly blue, and gatekeeper.

There are dragonflies and damselflies including beautiful and banded demoiselles, emperor and four-spotted chaser.

A range of beetles such as bloody-nosed beetle and rhinoceros beetle have been recorded on site.

Thatcham Reedbeds

Visit the nearby Thatcham Reedbeds, one of the largest areas of inland reedbed in Southern England and home to some of the country's rarest reed specialists, including Desmoulin's snail.
