Blenheim Farm

Just outside Charlbury, Blenheim Farm is a peaceful haven, surrounded by hedgerows and scrubby woodland, delightful for walking and studying. The wooded areas provide perfect conditions for a variety of songbirds, and the meadow is full of picturesque grasses and flowers.

Community nature reserve

Blenheim Farm is a community nature reserve, where local volunteers help the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust look after the meadow. It was given to the Trust to ensure its survival as a place available for walking, studying and enjoyment. The meadow is cut once a year by the volunteers.

Local wildlife

The site lies at the top of a sheltered limestone valley. It is surrounded by hedgerows and scrubby woodland - ideal conditions for a variety of songbirds including blackcap and chiffchaff. Butterflies such as common blue, marbled white and orange-tip also enjoy its sheltered warmth. Grasses and flowers include cowslips, lady's bedstraw and common knapweed - all species which are typical of alkaline to neutral soils. The old hedges contain a variety of species including field maple, crab apple, dogwood and spindle. A new pond has added diversity and interest.

"The annual hayrake at Blenheim Farm is a wonderful chance for the local community to remember what farming used to be like and how wildlife-friendly activities can bring local people together" - BBOWT volunteer
