 What is BBOWT?
The Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) is one of 47 Wildlife Trusts working across Britain to achieve the shared aim of securing a better future for wildlife. We are all independent county-based charities, but come together under the umbrella of the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts giving strength to our work at a regional and national level.
The Wildlife Trusts
Together the Wildlife Trusts partnership manages over 2,200 nature reserves and has a membership of over 807,000 people. This makes us the largest UK network of organisations dedicated exclusively to conserving all our habitats and species.
The Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust was established in 1959 by local ecologists who could see the extent of harm being done to the wonderfully rich natural environment of the three counties.
To date BBOWT has more than 1,300 active volunteers and about 54,000 members.
What does BBOWT do?
BBOWT is the only voluntary organisation in the region concerned with all aspects of nature conservation. Our vision is to create a region rich in wildlife and appreciated by all.
We aim to:
- inspire, encourage and support people to take action for wildlife
- buy, create and manage nature reserves to safeguard species and habitats
- work in partnership to conserve and enhance wildlife in the wider countryside and urban areas.
How does BBOWT achieve these aims?
- The Trust manages 80 nature reserves around the three counties. These act like 'reservoirs' from which wildlife can spread back in the wider countryside
- A programme of wildlife walks, illustrated talks, reserve work parties and events helps people to find out about nature conservation
- BBOWT lobbies decision makers and aims to influence local and regional plans and policies
- The Trust encourages landowners, including farmers, local authorities and industry to manage their land in a wildlife-friendly way
- The Trust's Community Wildlife Officers work with local groups to develop Community Nature Reserves
- BBOWT runs environmental education centres in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire which cater for more than 8,000 primary school children each year.
How is BBOWT's work funded?
The Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust’s income comes from a range of sources: membership subscriptions, grants, fundraising, legacies, business support and trusts. The Trust is governed by a Board of Trustees who give their time voluntarily.
