This workshop is a two-part training session. The first part is an introduction to managing green spaces. This is an interactive exercise, helping you to manage your patch for people and wildlife.
The second half of the day is an introduction to basic site surveying. This is a practical exercise aiming to give individuals the confidence to begin surveying a site and recording the findings.

About the event

During the first part of the training session (managing green spaces), we will:

• Look at the key things you'll need to consider when approaching your space

• Show you how to map out your space

• Give you an idea of the key things to think about when planning the management of your area

Learning outcomes:

• Develop a greater understanding of legal, environmental, and practical requirements for managing spaces

• Gain the knowledge and the confidence to create your own management plans

For the second part of the training session (basic site survey), we will:

  • Map the site, mapping the vegetation cover
  • Estimate proportional cover of vegetation types - whole site survey and using a quadrat
  • Count number of different species - whole site survey and using a quadrat

Learning outcomes:

  • Develop deeper understanding of your site and the vegetation types within it.
  • Develop confidence monitoring and surveying plant species.
  • Develop confidence using percentage cover techniques/use of the DAFOR scale.
  • Confidence/ability to compose a species record of known plant types.

We will be mostly indoors but may go on a walk at lunchtime, so if you wish to join the walk please bring suitable footwear and weather-appropriate clothing. 

Teas, coffees and snacks will be provided, but please bring your own lunch.
