Fifty
50 years, 50 species
A new book celebrating the wildlife of Berks, Bucks and Oxon and the important role BBOWT has taken in protecting it over the last 50 years

Just over 50 years ago, a small group of people met one cold November evening in a school hall in Oxford. This small band of naturalists understood that urgent action was needed to protect the natural world from threat, so they committed themselves to work to halt the needless destruction of our wild places and wildlife. And so the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust was born.

Today, the actions of those early pioneers mean that we can still enjoy a host of spectacular wild plants and animals in their natural habitats. We have a huge amount to thank those founding members for: Fifty is a tribute to them.

As you turn the pages of this beautiful book we hope that you will be awed by the sheer beauty of our wildlife and enjoy reading about the ways in which BBOWT has helped to protect it.

We have chosen just 50 species to showcase, but it could so easily have been 500, if only we had the space... there are just so many stores to tell! But one thing is certain: it would have been a very different story if BBOWT had not existed. With your continuing support we look forward to the next 50 years.

Foreword by
Steve Backshall
“As a child I hankered after the exotic, but the more I lived out my dreams, the more I came to truly appreciate what had been staring me in the face: the shy sprouting of a tiny orchid, the unexpected grandeur of a sphinx moth, a barn owl flashing through the headlights... I could go on and on.”
