Upper River Ray Floodplain

The Upper River Ray area on the Bucks/Oxon border, is one of the last remaining strongholds for threatened wading birds and traditional floodplain meadows in England.

The purchase of Gallows Bridge Farm in December 2007 and Leaches Farm in October 2009 has more than doubled the size of BBOWT’s Upper Ray Meadows Nature Reserve.  The acquistion of these meadows at the heart of this low-laying wetland region brings BBOWT one step closer to fulfilling its 30-year vision of returning the area to a living landscape for the benefit of wildlife and people.

Working in partnership
For the first time, BBOWT and the RSPB will work together and with farmers and landowners to conserve wildlife across the entire river catchment.

As part of the 'Ray Valley Restoration Project' we will:
  • work to improve river water quality
  • create new wetland habitats
  • increase community involvement in conservation across the River Ray landscape
The work of BBOWT and the RSPB around the River Ray is already being recognised nationally for spearheading landscape-scale wetland wildlife conservation.

Thank you
The purchase of Gallows Bridge Farm was possible following a successful public appeal that raised more than £150,000, together with a legacy and major grants from The Tubney Charitable Trust and the Landfill Communities Fund of Waste Recycling Group Ltd (WRG), distributed by WREN.

The restoration of the site is funded by The Tubney Charitable Trust, SITA Trust and BIFFAWARD.

Leaches Farm was purchased after a public appeal and generous support from WREN and Biffaward (as distributors of Landfill Communities Fund support from Waste Recycling Group and Biffa respectively) as well as Aylesbury Vale Community Chest and Aylesbury Vale District Council.
