West Berkshire Living Landscape

To protect, expand and enhance this unique and diverse landscape; creating an environment richer in wildlife. 
 
Project Area
The West Berkshire Living Landscape project is on the edge of Newbury and Thatcham and includes Greenham Common, Thatcham Reedbeds and BBOWT’s Bowdown Woods Nature Reserve. 
 
The project area covers more than 27 square kilometres of lowland heathland, ancient woodland, reedbeds, rivers and streams. It is a mosaic of land rich with history and wildlfe.

BBOWT and West Berkshire Council have joined forces in an initiative to:
Wildlife
There are many rare and important species in the area. The project will focus on species including:
  • adder
  • barn owl
  • bittern
  • dartford warbler
  • daubenton's bat
  • dormouse
  • grayling
  • great-crested newts
  • grizzled skipper
  • heathers
  • lapwing
  • little-ringed plover
  • nightjar
  • otter
  • ragged robin
  • redshank
  • ringed-plover
  • silver-studded blue
  • small blue
  • starfruit
  • watervole
  • woodlark

Heathland and Beyond
In January 2010 an exciting new 3-year project started.

The aim is to expand and enhance the most vital wildlife habitats in the West Berkshire Living Landscape area.
