Warburg Nature Reserve
A magical place to visit throughout the year with excellent visitor facilities. Warburg is the premier nature reserve of the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust and nestles in the tranquil Bix valley near Henley-on-Thames in Oxon.
The mixture of chalk grassland and ancient woodland makes it an ideal site for birds and butterflies. Over 2,000 species of plant, animal and fungus have been recorded here.
Seasonal highlights not to miss:
- wood anemones and a carpet of bluebells in spring
- helleborines and orchids in summer
- over 400 species of fungi and stunning colour in autumn
- hoar frosts in winter
- magnificent red kites cruising over the valley throughout the year

Woodland:
Scrub:
- rotational cutting to simulate natural wood edge
Chalk grassland:
- grazing from autumn to early spring to maintain low soil fertility needed by many wild flowers
- removing scrub to prevent succession to woodland
Getting there
4 miles north-west of Henley-on-Thames.
Directions from B480: At Middle Assendon take left fork 50 m after The Rainbow pub; at next junction follow sign to Bix Bottom; continue 1 mile further up the valley until you reach the car park on the right.
Directions from A4130: Take turning to Bix Village; ignore the first right and continue with the church on your right; after the houses take a left turn called Rectory Lane; at the bottom of the hill take a left turn signposted Bix Bottom; continue 1 mile further up the valley until you reach the car park on the right.
Getting around: 107.5 ha (265.5 acres) Variable; mostly steep paths with loose flint, flat grassy path; muddy in valley after rain; gates
