Dry Sandford Pit Nature Reserve

A fascinating mosaic of fossil-rich cliffs, fenland with ponds and streams, grassland, scrub and woodland set in an old quarry in Oxon.

Geological wonders, nationally scarce fen and rich insect life make Dry Sandford Pit a reserve of national importance.

Best time to visit: throughout the year

Reserve management:

General:
  • grazing
  • removing scrub to prevent succession to woodland

Water features: 

  • regulating water level
Rock exposures: 
  • maintaining faces free of scrub for burrowing insects 
Location: OS Sheet 164; SU 467 997
2 ½ miles north-west of Abingdon.  In Cothill village, 100 m west of Honeybottom Lane/Church Lane junction.  Surfaced car park.

By bicycle: use the National Cycle Network map on the Sustrans website.
Getting around: 7.5 ha (18.5 acres)
Undulating, steep cliffs; firm paths, some moderate slopes; kissing gates.

Wildlife walk: ½ mile.
