Wildmoor Heath Nature Reserve

Step back in time and experience a most valuable remnant of Berkshire heathland and bog – a wildlife refuge that is very much alive today.

Crossed by pylons and edged by housing, the reserve is home to a rich, albeit fragile community of mosses, fungi and flowering plants, invertebrates, reptiles and birds.

Best time to visit: spring, summer, autumn

Reserve management:

Heath:
  • grazing during summer to maintain low soil fertility
  • removing scrub to prevent succession to woodland
Bog:
  • regulating water level
  • grazing to reduce purple moor-grass
Location: OS Sheet 175; SU 842 627
Crowthorne. On Crowthorne road, 1 mile north of Sandhurst station. Surfaced car park.

By bicycle: use the National Cycle Network map on the Sustrans website.

Getting around: 99 ha (247.5 acres)
Variable; mainly firm, gently sloping, sandy paths, some boggy peat, some rough underfoot, can be very muddy in winter; gates, squeeze stiles, boardwalks

Wildlife walk: 1½ miles
