Local Wildlife Sites
These are special places which have been identified for their wildlife value in a county context.
Local Wildlife Sites (formerly known as County Wildlife Sites) are an essential part of creating a better connected landscape of wildlife buffers, corridors and stepping stones so that the countryside is more resilient to the pressures of modern living and climate change.
Most sites are in private ownership and their long-term survival depends upon the interest and goodwill of their land managers and owners.
The Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust manages the Oxfordshire Wildlife Sites Project on behalf of the Oxfordshire local authorities. The Oxfordshire Wildlife Sites Project is a partership between the Trust and the Thames Valley Environmental Records Centre. Established in 1988, the project provides free wildlife surveys and information about conservation to owners of Local Wildlife Sites throughout Oxfordshire.
We can offer:
- site visits
- advice about sources of financial aid to support appropriate conservation management, such as the agri-environment schemes and grant funding
- free wildlife surveys, carried out by the Thames Valley Environmental Records Centre and volunteers. Surveys enable us to collect up-to-date data, and provide landowners with
information that can be useful in guiding management and making applications for grant schemes.
